Living in KZN brings together a select group of artists from a variety of backgrounds who live in KwaZulu Natal, both in the rural and urban areas.
KwaZulu Natal is the second largest province in South Africa as far as population is concerned. Durban is the largest city in the province, and is the 3rd largest city in the country. It is from Durban that artSPACE berlin and Tradepoint South Africa have worked together to make this exhibition happen.
Due to the financial constraints of many people living in South Africa, artists are many times harder hit than most. This exhibition provides a select group of artists the opportunity to show their work outside the country, and they themselves travel, sometimes for the first time, beyond the borders of the continent of Africa.
Tradepoint South Africa facilitates small and medium enterprises in finding new growth opportunities. One way to do this is by identifying exporting strategies and it is here that artSPACE berlin can help by organizing exhibitions at their gallery in Berlin, Germany. Tradepoint South Africa has also facilitated crafters from South Africa to exhibit their products at Import Shop Berlin at the Messe (11-15 November).
The Living in KZN artists produce a diverse range of artistic styles as is typically found in the province and also in the country as a whole. The styles range from the ceramics and woven baskets to the more traditional paintings of rural scenes to paintings reflecting social awareness, all with a contemporary twist.
We, at artSPACE berlin, believe that it is opportunities like these in which artists are given a platform to exhibit their work that helps in the development of the country in these trying times.
