artSPACE berlin gives artists the opportunity to show their art in one of the most exciting art centres in the world. Most of our artists are sourced from our first gallery in Durban, South Africa.

artSPACE berlin, which consists of 4 separate spaces, is located in the Mitte area and was founded in 2007. The main aim of the gallery is to show work by artists who are connected to Africa in some way.

artSPACE berlin chooses not to proclaim loudly that it shows only art by artists who are strongly affiliated with Africa because we want the viewing public to first see the work, and then discover that the artists have an African connection. Perceptions of African art are changing and artSPACE berlin is a part of this change.

The difficulty has been that although the artists have successful careers in Africa, when they show in Europe for the first time, it is an introduction of their work to a new art market, so in a sense they are ‘emerging' artists too. As time goes on, the gallery will again show their work and one will begin to see a pattern of growth in the artist's art making.

artSPACE berlin and artSPACE durban give our exhibiting artists a platform on which to exhibit their work and to reach a wider audience in Europe by providing a space in Berlin. We become facilitators in helping make the path a bit easier for the artists to reach new audiences.
